Music is a very important aspect of our services at Christ Presbyterian Church. To give a historical perspective, in 1978-79 Dorothy Loyer organized a choir to sing during Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. From 1980-1994, Karla Brown directed the choir and played piano, as well. The group of 12 to 18 participants was called “The Ensemble” and sang from October through Christmas, and during Lent and Easter, as well.
From 1994-1996, Marilyn Stoutenburg was the accompanist and a small choir performed at the Christmas Eve services. Pastor Bill Cox and his wife, Nan, organized our present adult choir in 1996. We now sing an anthem at every Sunday service and perform a special musical program at Christmas Eve and Easter services.
The choir ranges in numbers from 4 to 8; no one is turned away, and while reading music is helpful, it’s not a requirement.
Our Choral Director, Dr. David Lingle also is the Telluride Choral Society Artistic Director. The choir meets every Sunday at 8:45 a.m. in the sanctuary to prepare for that morning’s anthem.
We are also blessed with the musical gifts of Bob Israel, our pianist, who offers his talents every Sunday. In addition to the anthem, the choir members (along with the congregation) sing three hymns at our Sunday service, and occasionally we host local guest musicians.
Our church is sometimes a venue for the Telluride Choral Society’s winter, spring and kids performances, and the Children’s Christmas Pageant is also a musical treat around the holidays.
